Looking for party ideas for Dia de los Muertos? This Day of the Dead Dinner Party is packed full of ideas. From recipes, to table settings, to crafts, you will have everything you need to throw a successful party! #ad #CollectiveBias #CelebrateLosMuertos #DayoftheDead

Have you ever heard of Dia de los Muertos? I hadn’t until I moved to Texas. Otherwise known as “Day of the Dead”, this is an occasion celebrated in Texas & Mexico. It is a way for family members to remember loved ones, and to help them along their spiritual journey after parting the earth. The first time I saw sugar skulls, I thought they were…mmm…unsettling? Now that I have lived her for so long, I don’t think twice when I see them, and I can truly appreciate their craftsmanship and beauty. I hosted a “Dia de los Muertos” dinner party, and I’d love to show you how easy it is to recreate! I’ll be including recipes, and even the files for these cut “Papel Picado” (banners). Even the place setting flower is included! This post will be very picture heavy, so please be patient with loading. Hopefully all the bright colors will inspire you!

BASIC SET UP

Dia de Los Muertos Party set up

This was the candy bar /dessert bar. Above it, I featured large sugar skull paper banners. I also have some of the little flowers hanging as a banner.

Throw a dinner party for Day of the Dead

In the middle is a foam sugar skull, and along the table is a smaller floral banner. These remind me so much of the colorful banners you see in Mexican restaurants.
Using a cricut to make papel picado

You can see the intricate details of the banners better here. My Cricut machine cut all these for me! It was time consuming, but requires little effort from me (the machine is the true workhorse!).

skulls painted with mettallic paint

In the middle of the dessert buffet, I have 2 skulls that I painted with metallic paint and then fit marigolds into their eye space.
Skull mask painted
They are simple paper mache masks that you can find at a craft store.

Dia de los Muertos table runner

The table featured this fun sugar skull table runner. I also placed the circle flowers all around.

Sugar skull coffee mug filled with marigolds

I found this sugar skull coffee mug while I was grabbing my dinner menu items at my HEB. I used it as a vase for marigolds.
I just love the vibrant colors that go along with Dia de los Muertos.

DINNER TIME

Day of the Dead nametag placeholder

For a twist on the usual, I placed my guests salad in a small ball jar, and added a fun lacework style flower and a name tag that was embellished with rhinestones.

Salad in a jar for your guests

The salad just slides right out.

Dia de los Muertos Menu

I served my guests NESTLÉ® STOUFFER'S® lasagna because it is one of the easiest meals I can make. When I go all out with decor and desserts, I don’t want to think about a main meal. I always have one in my freezer, because they can be made in a cinch when I have forgotten to think about what’s for dinner. A lot of guests enjoy it, so it’s a win win.

Stouffers Family size lasagna

I purchased the family size for my party, but they have an even bigger one — a Party size! Be sure to stock for freezer with both!

Stouffers lasagna layers

There are several different varieties of lasagna, and each comes with the fun traditional curly edge noodles!

Stouffers Lasagna for quick dinner

Our family fights over “Middle” or “Edge” pieces. What about yours?

Bread on a cutting board

We rounded out the salad and lasagna with garlic bread. You can see some of the memorial candles I picked up at HEB as well as the small cut flowers.

Now that you’ve seen the delicious dinner, let’s move onto the desserts……….

DESSERT BUFFET

Dia de los Muertos Dessert bar buffet

The buffet in the back held mainly desserts for my guests.

Day of the Dead cupcakes

I saved time by buying plain remade cupcakes at HEB. On top I added sugar Sugar Skulls. I also found sugar skull cupcake wrappers that I added to the cupcakes. Easy Peasy!

Desserts for Dia de los Muertos

Oh….I spy some desserts here!

Sugar Skull Chocolate chip cookie trifles.

These may look odd, but they are so delicious! Beneath that chocolate pudding is layers of more pudding, and NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Ultimates Chocolate Chip Lovers Cookies. Amazing! The skulls are simply made out of tempered NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® White Chocolate Morsels piped into a skull shape. The recipe for the Sugar Skull Chocolate Trifle will be below!

Here you can see the fun banner draped off the table.

White chocolate Ginger Snap Pumpkin dip

On the other side you can see the White Chocolate Pumpkin Ginger Snap Dip I made (recipe will also be below)

Fruit plate for day of the dead

In addition to a try of cheese and crackers, I offered a fruit tray and a bowl full of NESTLÉ® Nerds.

Nestle Nerds for Dia de los Muertos

I also placed some in their packages for guests to take home with them.
WHEW, that was a lot, huh!

I know most of you are wondering what in the world my boys were doing while I was having dinner with my girlfriends. Well, they were having a party of their own!

To make my life easy, I grabbed TOMBSTONE® pepperoni pizzas with this fun Halloween wrapping. NESTLÉ® NESQUIK® so they could have a fun drink for a treat, and then for dessert I created a recipe using NESTLÉ® BUTTERFINGER® combined with NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Ready To Bake Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. I made those super cute & fun NESTLÉ® BUTTERFINGER® "Petite Fours". I'll be sharing that recipe soon!

This quick meal was such a hit with the boys. They've already requested it for Halloween night and on such a hectic night, I'm totally up for this easy meal!

The good news? If you love HEB as much as I do, you don't want to miss out on this!
Look for a demo at your nearest HEB store, check out the list for locations and dates HERE. They will be sampling Pumpkin Cookie Butter dip with LIBBY'S® 100% Pure Pumpkin and HEB Specaloos Creamy Cookie Butter!

My HEB had a lot of Dia de los Muertos items, as well as Stouffer's lasagna!

Heb Family Size Meals
You can find the lasagna in the freezer section under "Family size meals".
The pizza is in the frozen aisle as well, under the Pizza sign.

Now that you’ve seen the party layout, the desserts, & my table settings, let’s move on to recipes!

Sugar Skull trifle

RECIPES

Sugar Skull Chocolate Lovers Trifle

For the pudding:
For the cookies:
For the Sugar Skulls:
1. First, make the ready to bake cookies according to the directions on the packaging. Set aside after baking, to allow for cooling.
2. Next, make the pudding. Combine the first 4 ingredients in a medium saucepan, whisking to combine evenly. Slowly add in the milk. Once it is incorporated turn on the stove to a medium heat. Continue stirring while mixture cooks. It will take about 10 minutes, but all of the sudden you will feel the pudding come together! It’s amazing! Be sure to whisk constantly, so you don’t get burnt pudding on the bottom of the pan! Once it comes together, remove from heat. Add in the chocolate morsels and stir until they melt, and the mixture is glossy. Allow to cool. Place cling wrap directly on the pudding if you do not want a crust to form. I cool mine in the fridge.
3. Sugar skulls— Draw skull shapes on paper as a guide. Place wax paper on top. Melt 1 cup of morsels in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir. Cook 30 seconds more. Stir. All the morsels should melt by the second stirring. Usually the residual heat will melt any remaining morsels. Once stirred well and smooth, place in a ziplock bag. Snip a tiny corner, and pipe the chocolate into the skull shape. This is almost like icing a cookie. Use a small spreader or a toothpick to fill in any gaps.

White Chocolate Pumpkin Ginger Snap Dip

Ingredients:
1. Allow butter and cream cheese to soften. Then, mix on medium speed in a stand mixer. After mixed well, add both sugars, the pumpkin, and the spices. Add the ginger snaps and morsels last.
2. Allow to cool and firm up in the refrigerator, and store until ready to eat.
3. Warning—a fun dessert- it won’t last long!

Dia de los Muertos "Day of the Dead" SVG Cutting Files

Last but not least, here are the files for the amazing papel picado.
In the file folder there will be three files: 12 x 12 sugar skull, 8x8 floral banner and 3 inch floral designs. Please remember, these are for personal use only. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoyed my party! If you celebrate Dia de los Muertos I’d love to hear about it!
It would be wonderful if you pinned my party so that others can see it too!

  1. This party is amazing! I've heard of The Day of the Dead, but we've never celebrated it. After seeing your amazing decor -- that banner, OMG, and the coffee mug/vase -- and the delicious food, I can't wait to have a Dia de los Muertos party of our own.

And we are big fans of Stouffer's lasagna here, too. I think I like the juicy outside pieces the best!

    1. Thanks Amy! I had no idea until I moved to Texas! It's lots of fun. Some of the Mexican restaurants here have murals that have the sugar skulls, and it took the kids awhile to figure that out ;)

PS: I used one of your parties for inspiration (Fanta).
