Ways To Give Back This Holiday Season

  • This post was sponsored by Johnson & Johnson as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

This year has been a challenging year for our family. We try to be a charitable family, but for the first 7 months of the year, it felt like we were more on the receiving end. Ever since my boys were little, I have tried to instill the importance of giving. Whether it is as simple as a helping hand with groceries, a door propped open, or just the gift of friendly conversation. 2016 started out with my recovery from surgery, and being couch bound for months. People came out of the wood work to help us. We received everything from restaurant gift cards, to housecleaning, to a carpool system for my kiddos. The generosity was overwhelming. It was the shining light, in a year of foggy darkness. The gifts came from family, friends, neighbors and even total strangers. We were so deeply touched by this outpouring.  It gave us a new found appreciation for gifting and giving our time, talents and much more.

Although we try to give year round, the Christmas spirit makes us a bit more generous in December. I’m sure all of you get that inkling in your stomach, that now more than ever is a good time to pay it forward. When raising children, December becomes a pivotal month in explaining why sometimes giving is much better than receiving. I hope I have fostered giving hearts in my children.

Since things are hectic this time of year, I wanted to share with you a few simple ways that make giving back so much easier. We typically take cookies to our neighbors, so I’ve included this free printable for you to print out (at any size you want - but I think a 4x6 would be perfect for those cookie trays).  You can find the links for the high resolution printables at the bottom of this post.

Another way we are giving back this year is with the Johnson & Johnson Donate A Photo App. This is a free app that you download for your device. When I downloaded the app, it showed me that over 1,400,000 photos have helped 89 causes! That’s a lot of giving back! So how does this work? For every photo you share through the app, $1 will be donated to the cause you pick. By sharing photos on social media channels, you are raising awareness for these causes. The best part? You can donate a photo once a day, every day
J&J photo app

Once inside the app, you can select the causes you’d like to have a donation sent to. Some examples are:  Americares Tennessee Wildfires Relief, Operation Smile, and Sight For Kids. I picked the USO because this is an organization that has directly helped our family. The USO is a wonderful organization that helps service members. They do everything from providing meals during the holidays for service members to providing comfortable lounges in airports while service members are traveling and transitioning. They provide entertainment for our troops while they are overseas protecting our freedoms. The initiative for the app is for keeping soldiers connected with their families. Each donation through the Johnson & Johnson Share A Photo App will go towards video calls or phone calls. These are priceless for our soldiers overseas. It’s really such a small gesture on our side but such a considerable gesture for those who are away from their families this holiday season. What a simple but meaningful way to give back.

J&J app

It was simple to upload a photo to the app. You can even set reminders to upload daily. Be sure to scroll through the charities and find the one that you feel connected to. There are so many to choose from!

  • Johnson & Johnson has curated a list of trusted causes, and you can donate a photo to one cause, once a day. Each cause will appear in the app until it reaches its goal, or the donation period ends. If the goal isn't reached, the cause will still get a minimum donation.

Another way to give back this holiday season is by gifting through the Save The Children “Gifts of Joy” holiday catalogue. This is especially great if you have someone difficult to buy for. You know the one. The one that already has everything and doesn’t need anything! I purchased a soccer ball and orphan education for my kiddos. It seemed like a natural fit. I was able to print off a card from my computer to gift to the boys on Christmas morning. I’m glad that they will be able to know that halfway around the world, another child is excited about a gift because of them. The site is easy to navigate and you can shop by price, by gifts, or by the causes you want to help.

When you purchase a gift from the Save The Children “Gifts of Joy” catalogue, Johnson and Johnson matches your donation. They have set up a donation system for $10 million dollars over the period of 3 years. That’s amazing! You can find out more about that HERE. Not only does Johnson and Johnson met your medical and hygiene needs here at home, but they are meeting the needs of those across the world. Johnson and Johnson have been a longtime partner with Save The Children and are pivotal in setting up emergency programs.
