It’s that time again! Can you believe it? Another month has passed and it’s time for me to post my entry for this month’s Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest. This month’s theme was “Spray it Pretty”. How fun is that? This month’s contest was sponsored by HomeRight. They make some amazing products for DIY’ers and I’ve had the opportunity to try several of them out in the past. This month, contest participants were sent a paint sprayer. I actually already own their Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP sprayer and let me tell you— it’s amazing! If you’ve never sprayed furniture before, you have to try it out. It’s life changing!
I decided to change things up a bit this month and share this dresser.
Somehow, my master bedroom dresser drawers started overflowing, so I decided it was time to bring in a taller, skinnier dresser. I found this guy on our local buy and sell board.
It had seen better days.
Truth be told, it came out of some college apartment that was sort of scary.
But with a little bit of love, TLC and some paint, it was given a new life!
I had admired hand painted dressers for a long time. But, I lack any type of hand control or talent for that.
I can pounce a mean stencil though!
For a dresser like this, the stenciling is easy if you have 2 things:
(You have to wait for the stencil to dry).
And this secret weapon:
Tulip Stencil Spray is your new best friend. No more tape, no more shifty stencils.
This is my “Spray It Pretty” part of the monthly competition. It’s my little twist on the theme.
You can just barely see it (follow the end of the orange power cord!). The sprayer is fabulous. The paint goes on like butter. It’s so simple to use too. I had a sprayer before that I had to use my air compressor with and it was awkward, loud and just not as nice. I truly love the HomeRight Sprayer. I get a lot of questions about my spray shelter, and that’s from HomeRight too! It keeps me from painting the wrong thing, haha.
I did the stencil for the dresser just like I did for the desk:
I lightly sprayed the stencil with the stencil spray adhesive. I fanned it back and forth and stuck it to my old t-shirt one time, to make sure it didn’t have any major glue clumps. I then placed it where it needed to go. I then dipped my foam stencil / pouncer brush into a slightly contrasting color paint and blotted it a few times on a paper towel to make sure the paint was even and not excessive. I then slowly worked my way around the stencil. I let the paint sit for a minute or two, and then removed the stencil. The hardest part is waiting for the paint to try to line up the stencil to start on the next motif!
Once you finally get all the stenciling done, you will be amazed. It added so much to the project. I did hand paint some lines with a thin artist brush to add a little “handmade” charm.
Next thing you know, you go from this:
