Personalized Christmas Stocking with a Cricut

I absolutely LOVE my Cricut machine. I started out with an Expression years ago, and upgraded to the Cricut Air 2 last year. I have made a lot of Christmas crafts over the years with my cricut, like my farmhouse wood sign and my Home for the Holidays sign (with FREE SVG file!). I have fingers crossed for the Cricut Maker to show up under my tree! I think it would look pretty cozy under there, next to the snazzy personalized Christmas stockings I made my kiddos!
I really like having a color theme and a feature to go through all my decorations. It simply makes life easier for me. When I was shopping the other day, I stumbled across these plain stockings and I figured I could kick them up a notch. I decided to make a holly pin that can be removed in case I change my color theme again!
The holly is super fun, and not traditional in any way. Leather? Canvas? Say what?!!! okay, the leather is faux leather, but real leather is still an option! The beads I used are from a necklace I picked up a few years back at Round Top. I loved it, but it was old and brittle and it eventually broke. So I saved the beads for a time like this!
In addition, I added iron on vinyl to make it a personalized Christmas stocking. My boys love having their name on anything. And for my own sanity, I do too!
Let me walk you through step by step how I made this project!
PERSONALIZED CHRISTMAS STOCKING:
- Step one: Start with your design. I simply searched for "holly" in the projects section of Cricut Design Space. I settled on the Holly Berry Gift Tag and modified the design slightly. The holly I picked is the second project in this photo:
- Once I had it loaded into design space, I enlarged it a bit. I wanted it to be roughly the length of my stocking cuff. I deleted the top layer with text and also the slider tag. The Christmas holly berry has 5 layers. I deleted the top 3 (mainly the berries and the top holly leaves that had the centers cut out of them. Here I've shown the two layers left stacked on top of each other. The layers to delete are not shown, except for the right side with the eye crossed out. You can delete those.
- Next, you'll want to ungroup those two layers like so:
- You'll want to mulitply the holly by how many stockings your making. I was making 4, so I created 4 copies of the tan holly and 8 copies of the green holly. I'll explain the math in a minute. In the picture below, I'm showing 2 bunches. So 2 tan, and 4 green. The bottom 2 green holly leaves need to be flipped horizontally like so:
- Now you are all ready to cut! Go ahead and click MAKE IT! To make it super easy, you can CLICK HERE and you will have the design for 2 holly bunches. Your first layer will be the back tan layer. I picked a nice jewel tone aqua (peacock) faux leather for mine. The faux leather cuts like butter! WOW! I set my dial on custom and searched for leather. Easy Peasy. Once your pieces are cut, set aside.
- Next up is the canvas. I'm not gonna lie, it's a bit more time intensive. For my canvas, I backed it with heat and bond following the directions on the package. I cut it to approximately 12x12 and then cut my canvas around the heat and bond.
- I then placed the canvas on the green cricut mat. DO NOT REMOVE THE PAPER FILM FROM THE HEAT AND BOND. This is also the side you want touching the green mat. Your fabric should be looking straight at you. I set my machine on custom again and selected canvas. I repeated this step with 3 passes without ever taking the mat out. This allowed the cricut to cut through all the layers. Once everything was cut out and weeded, I pulled off the heat and bond paper, stuck 2 pieces of canvas together, and then ironed them. The heat and bond is the "glue" inbetween and gives the canvas holly a bit of "bulk".
- To add a bit of fun, I stiched a row of stiches down the middle of the holly levels to step up the dimension a bit. This is purely optional.
- Now it's time to put our holly together! This was easy peasy with my glue gun!
- I merely glued in the area where the berries were set to go, and then a small strip along the stitching. This allows the holly to "pop" up. I folded it up a bit before glueing down.
- I mentioned that I added a pin so I could change these out if I wanted to in the future. I hot glued it on the back of the leather.
- I also made some with pearl paper and added beads to those in the same spot.
- Now it's time to PERSONALIZE that stocking! The fun part. I love how this simple step customizes it! I placed the holly on my stocking cuff and measured how much room I had for my son's name. I picked the font: Cake Basic.
- I cut the iron on vinyl using the iron on setting and made sure to flip it horizontally! If you need a good tutorial on iron on, you can see my step-by step- tutorial HERE.
- Weed your vinyl, making sure you keep the clear part intact! Center your name where you would like it. I love this part! Cover with a cloth and use your home iron or Cricut's handy new Easy Press! Right now, I'm using my home iron. It still gets the job done, maybe with just a bit more elbow grease. Plus almost everyone has an iron, right?!!! Once the vinyl has fully adheared, peel off the clear layer. PRESTO! Pin your holly on and your all finished! WOW!
